Herring Fishing
Client
ROVE Productions partnered with a Herring Science Council to tell a human centered story about Canadian food production. The focus was on the people behind the work, the fishermen, the processing teams, and the coastal communities connected to the fishery, capturing the pride, skill, and care that go into every stage of the process. The film presents herring not just as a product, but as part of a larger ecosystem that supports livelihoods, local economies, and a deeply rooted way of life.
From concept through final delivery, our team led the full production, documenting life on the water and onshore with a restrained, observational approach. We emphasized natural light, real moments, and intentional pacing to reflect the dignity of the work and the respect given to both the resource and the people who depend on it. The final piece was designed to look forward acknowledging the active efforts being made to guide herring stocks toward a healthier future, while reinforcing the importance of responsible fisheries to the long-term vitality of Nova Scotia’s coastal communities and Canada’s food system.
